The humble Crayola chalk is one of those every-day mediums that often falls beneath the radar- after all, we’ve known it since grade school. But in revisiting this timeless medium, we will rediscover its potential for creating beautiful simple and timeless lettering in a low-tech, affordable, and approachable way! Class includes a quick walk-thru on some basic lettering techniques, creating a thumbnail sketch and then bringing it to life as a larger-scale chalkboard piece.

SARAH APPLE caught the lettering bug while doing specials boards for a restaurant where she worked during her studies at VCU. After graduating with a degree in Communication Arts she began her one-lady rodeo show named Lucky Signs. You can find her work in small businesses around town such as The Broad, North End Juice Co, Superstars Pizza, Strawberry Street Cafe, and more. Her toolbox of tricks is constantly growing, and she self describes herself as ever-a-student of the lettering craft.

You know you deserve one… and you know someone else who does, too. Come make some lovely flowery headwear in celebration of spring! You’ll learn how to arrange faux florals in an artful style that will enhance the beauty of any wearer.

KRISTIN HOTT A "retired" 90's pop music drummer, Kristin Hott now makes music with color, form and history. Her hand sewn dolls incorporate vintage fabrics and buttons, and her flower crowns are bright, whimsical and Frida-esque. She makes and upcycles through her creative company, Yellow Lantern Co., from a tiny hand-built pallet studio in Mechanicsville, VA. An experienced educator and workshop facilitator, Kristin seeks out the fun and spontaneity in making and invites you to adventure along, too.

This workshop plays in the relationship between word and image, form and feeling, signage and location.  Together, we’ll experiment with writing, carving, stencil-making and screen printing to create our own unique, abstract and text-based prints.

Using surprise and ‘not knowing’ as a strategy, we will work alone and in collaboration. We will explore the delights of chance operations, the surprises of collaboration, and the freedom in working fast and loose.

We’ll work with gorgeous transparent inks, playful typography and oblique narratives.

You will leave with unique finished prints as a result of the process.

We aren’t building technical virtuosity. This experience is about the value of going astray and what can be found there.

First time printers/writers and those who are very advanced are all SUPER welcome.

Pre-work:  Bring a 100 word autobiography to the class.  It should include the most important things that have made you who you are today.  It should be printed out or written on paper and be exactly 100 words. Why? You’ll see why…

Payment plan available: $25 deposit plus 2 payments of $25.00

In this introduction to modern calligraphy, we will cover the basic techniques and tools to get you started in pointed-pen calligraphy. You'll practice pen strokes and work through letters. By the end, you'll write a simple quote in your own distinct style!

KATHRINE DAROY is a modern calligrapher who is a southern Californian through and through but has admittedly fallen head over heels for Richmond since moving here over a decade ago. She is the one woman operation behind Capital Calligraphy, a tiny but mighty small business aimed at sharing her love for hand lettering. When she's not designing or writing, you can find her eating tacos and drinking an iced Americano with her husband and son.
